What is PCIT?

PCIT, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, is a family therapy to build skills for parents and children (ages 2-7). PCIT is effective to improve children’s behaviors and parents’ feelings of agency. PCIT includes playing with your child to improve your relationship with your child.

PCIT is a structured approach and includes:

  • Weekly sessions for 14-16 weeks

  • Education sessions to teach parents:

    • How to engage child

    • How to manage behaviors

    • How to give clear instructions and consistent consequences

  • Coaching sessions

    • Conducted in playroom with therapist observing through one way window

    • Allows for therapist to provide real time feedback

    • Bolsters parents’ skills and confidence
